Super Saturday at the major European Championships is becoming a tradition for the Swiss team. Last June at the title fights in Rome, Swiss Athletics celebrated four medals. And on Saturday evening in Apeldoorn there were now three: gold for Angelica Moser, silver for Annik Kälin and Simon Ehammer.

The trio stood in the arena at the same time. As Ehammer ran the lap of honor, he clapped Angelica Moser, who had just jumped over 4.70 m. Annik Kälin also soaked up the applause. Annik Kälin also soaked up the atmosphere. "I was rooting for Angelica," she says. "We had hoped in advance that it would be a Swiss evening," adds Angelica Moser. "We talked about it, especially as I share a room with Annik."

Dynamism

"We're all still young, but we've been traveling together for so long. And everyone keeps improving," enthuses Annik Kälin. "That motivates you, it pulls you along." And the development goes on and on.

Whenever the plateau seems to have been reached, there's always another step up. For this reason, Switzerland leads the medal table on Saturday evening with two gold and two silver medals. On Sunday, Audrey Werro and Mujinga Kambundji are two more candidates for a top spot.

Records

So far, each of the four Swiss medals in Apeldoorn is linked to a Swiss record. After Ditaji Kambundji's European record on Friday, Angelica Moser equaled the national record in the pole vault with 4.80 m, and Ehammer with 6506 points in the heptathlon and Annik Kälin with 6.90 m in the long jump also made an entry in the record books.

"I both won silver and lost gold," summarized Ehammer. "I'm happy with the score, I broke the European record that was valid before the European Indoor Championships. But I could have won gold here. I missed out in the 60m and high jump." With a view to the decathlon, the 8600-point mark should now fall.

Angelica Moser rates the 4.80 m very highly, especially as she had to make adjustments in training due to problems with her foot. "After a tricky indoor season, this performance is worth a lot." The Zurich native had already crossed 4.88 m last summer and therefore tried her hand at 4.89 m. "But the emotions were too strong for me to show very good jumps."

Annik Kälin opened the competition with a bang. Straight away 6.90 m. "I was super perplexed," she describes the moment when the number lit up. "But I trembled for the medal until the very end. You never know," she says.

She now wants to use her form to set a Swiss record in the pentathlon at the World Indoor Championships in China in two weeks' time. Ehammer is taking the opposite route and traveling to the second indoor title fights of this year as a long jumper - due to the corona pandemic, an indoor world championship will be held later. Angelica Moser will also board the plane to China.
