The Swiss team demonstrates its progress in the sprint at the World Cup final in Lahti. In the team sprint, both Anja Weber/Nadine Fähndrich and Grond/Riebli waved from the podium.
World Championship bronze medallists Anja Weber and Nadine Fähndrich also made it onto the podium in the World Cup. The duo finished 3rd in the team sprint in the skating technique.
Behind Germany and Sweden's final skiers, Nadine Fähndrich had the better finish. After watching the finish film, it was clear that it was the Swiss and not the Norwegians who should be celebrating. Four hundredths made the difference.
The Swiss duo had already finished third in the World Cup in Davos. Nadine Fähndrich waved from the World Cup podium for the ninth time this winter, plus two World Championship medals. Anja Weber stood on the World Cup podium for the third time this season, as well as taking bronze at the World Championships.
It would be wrong to pin the podium finish in Lahti solely on Nadine Fähndrich. On the contrary: Anja Weber skied extremely well and kept in touch with the leaders in the third relay. Nadine Fähndrich did not have to close any gaps. She was in the lead and was even in an ideal second position in the downhill to the finish.
Only Klaebo faster
After the women, the men also finished on the podium in the team sprint. Valerio Grond finished second behind Johannes Hösflot Klaebo. Prior to this, team colleague Janik Riebli had done very well and sent Grond into the sixth and final lap only slightly behind in fourth place.
The man from Obwalden and the man from Graubünden had already finished second in Davos this winter. The two are clearly better at the skating technique than classic. Next year at the Olympic Games, the team sprint will be skated on skating skis.
The Swiss team impressed primarily in the sprint events this World Cup winter. The men and women have achieved a dozen podium places in the sprint and team sprint.
