The Swiss women's handball team can definitely count on their first participation in the World Cup. In the first leg of the qualification play-off, they beat Slovakia 38:22 in St. Gallen.
After a mixed first half, the Swiss women fully lived up to their role as favorites against the Slovakians after the break. It took the Eastern Europeans a full eight and a half minutes before they scored for the first time in the second half. In the meantime, the home team had turned a narrow 16:15 lead into a 22:15 advantage.
The Swiss club then went into a veritable frenzy in the Kreuzbleiche-Halle and continuously extended its lead to sixteen goals. The defense was now also much more resolute and goalkeeper Lea Schüpbach saved 15 shots before making way for the final phase. She was named best player with a 46% defense rate. The best Swiss scorer was Tabea Schmid with eight goals.
Almost nothing can go wrong in the second leg in Slovakia on Sunday. The Swiss are likely to take part in their first World Cup finals from November 26 to December 14 in Germany and the Netherlands.
