Switzerland achieves the budgeted away win against Turkey in the European Championship qualifiers. The team of national coach Andy Schmid won 38:34 without shining.
An away win was a must against the Turks, who had started the campaign with two defeats. However, Schmid had warned of an "unpredictable opponent" beforehand.
The action in the hall in Diyarbakir was accordingly: after a tough start, the Swiss had built up a supposedly reassuring five-goal lead by the break. However, they failed to extend their lead in the second half. As a result, the coach was forced to admonish his team at times not to make life difficult for themselves.
In the end, however, the result was a victory that never came under threat, keeping the Swiss on course after the draw against Austria and the defeat against Germany. They can still hope for one of the top two places in the group, which entitles them to qualify directly. A second success is to follow on Sunday in the home game against Turkey in Winterthur (4 p.m.).
