Monday afternoon at the Winter Olympics in northern Italy turns into Switzerland's hour of happiness.
Less than 60 minutes after freestyler Mathilde Gremaud was crowned Olympic champion again in slopestyle, Franjo von Allmen and Tanguy Nef followed up with victory in the alpine team combined.
The last time Switzerland won two gold medals on the same day was in Sochi in 2014, when downhill winner Dominique Gisin and snowboarder Iouri Podladtchikov triumphed in the halfpipe. Four years earlier in Vancouver, Dario Cologna (15 km cross-country skiing) and Didier Défago (men's downhill) received their gold medals on the same day at the Medals Plaza.
With four gold medals, Cologna leads the list of the most successful Swiss Winter Olympians together with Simon Ammann. Gremaud is now in 6th place with two gold medals and one silver and one bronze medal each - as the second-best Swiss woman behind Vreni Schneider (3x gold, 1x silver, 1x bronze).
Meanwhile, Franjo von Allmen became Switzerland's first alpine double Olympic champion just two days after his downhill victory with gold in the team combined. He ranks 10th in the list of the best.
The crowning glory of the glorious Swiss day was provided by Gregor Deschwanden in the evening. The Lucerne ski jumper sensationally secured bronze on the normal hill. He is only the third Swiss ski jumper after Walter Steiner (silver in 1972) and Simon Ammann (two gold medals each in 2002 and 2010) to win an Olympic medal.
