The World Championships in Lenzerheide end in disappointment for the Swiss men's team. In the mass start, the trio of Hartweg, Stalder and Burkhalter had to settle for finishes outside the top 15.
Endre Strömsheim was crowned world champion in the supreme discipline. The surprise man won ahead of Sturla Holm Laegreid and Johannes Thingnes Bö, who completed the triple victory for the Norwegians.
Niklas Hartweg also failed to win a medal at his last attempt in Lenzerheide after finishing fifth in the individual and fourth in the single mixed relay.
With five hits at the start, he initially put himself in a very good starting position. Like Lena Häcki-Gross in the women's competition, he was even at the front of the field. And like the Obwalden native, the man from Schwyz did not pull through. After two penalty loops halfway through the race, he dropped to 18th place. There was nothing to complain about in the two standing shooting rounds with nine hits. But the Swiss skier lacked strength on the cross-country ski run. Hartweg was exhausted after his seventh World Championships appearance. He finished in 17th place, ahead of eight biathletes who had the same number or more penalties.
Sebastian Stalder only proved to a limited extent that he is one of the world's best shooters in the biathlon. Although the man from the Zurich Oberland started without any faults, he then made three more, just like Hartweg. Joscha Burkhalter scored 18 times, but the running performance of the man from Zurich and Bern only allowed him to finish 25th and 26th.
