After the first day of the Olympic regatta off Marseille, the Swiss 49er sailors Sébastien Schneiter and Arno de Planta find themselves in the middle of the rankings.
The Swiss duo put in a strong performance at the start of their first Olympic appearance together. Despite difficult wind conditions, Schneiter/De Planta secured 2nd place in the first race. The second and third runs then went less to the liking of the Genevans. After various small mistakes, they had to settle for 9th and 11th place respectively (scratch result). After three of twelve races, they are in 9th place. The top ten finishers reach the medal race.
"Overall, we are satisfied with the first day," said Arno de Planta after his Olympic premiere. Sébastien Schneiter, who is competing at the Summer Games for the third time, wants to "take away the positives above all. The regatta is not won on the first day - we just have to manage to eliminate the small mistakes over the next few days."
Colombo needs patience
There were no races for the iQ-Foil windsurfers. Elia Colombo from Ticino understood the race committee's decision: "It actually looked good at first, but as soon as we were out, the wind dropped completely. A regular competition would have been out of the question."
A stable area of high pressure with weak to very weak winds is forecast for the next few days in Marseille.
