The Swiss team is delighted with a sixth medal at the Freestyle World Championships in the Engadine. Substitute Valerio Jud and Sina Siegenthaler take third place in the snowboard cross team competition.
The medal behind France 1 and Australia 2 came as a surprise. Team leader Kalle Koblet is missing from the World Championships due to injury after failing to recover in time from a torn syndesmosis ligament he suffered in Erzurum at the beginning of the month.
The Emmental native shot out of the gate in fourth place in the top 4 final with a handicap of half a second on the medal positions. The 24-year-old was able to make up another place.
Sina Siegenthaler deserves a great deal of the credit for her success. The 24-year-old, who had to start with a deficit, initially made up 1.5 seconds on her three rivals in the quarter-finals and even passed the trio. In the semi-final, the boarder from the Flumserberg ski club handed over with an even bigger deficit. But Sina Siegenthaler easily made up two seconds. Under these conditions, even gold seemed possible in the final, as Jud was closer to the competition in the final run than ever before.
Jud had finished 37th in the individual qualification. The 24-year-old Sina Siegenthaler had to digest a disappointing 8th place in the singles on Saturday night after being the fastest in qualifying.
The team competition in snowboard cross has been run as a mixed event since 2019. In St. Moritz, Switzerland benefited from the fact that the men opened the competition.
