The Swiss national ice hockey team started their World Championship preparations with a win. Coach Patrick Fischer's team beat Slovakia 4:3 after overtime in Herisau.

In the last two years, the Slovaks were the Swiss team's first opponents in their World Championship preparations. Both times they lost with a clean sheet. In general, efficiency is a big issue when Fischer has to make do without the NHL stars. That's why Paul Di Pietro is part of the coaching staff for the first three weeks; the Stanley Cup winner with the Montreal Canadiens (1993) is supposed to promote finishing power.

This seems to be paying off, at least with four goals to show for it. Dario Rohrbach scored the winner after 2:18 minutes of overtime; the SCL Tigers' top scorer was successful for the first time in national dress. The draw after 60 minutes was just right. The Swiss made up for a deficit three times. The hosts' goals in regulation time were scored by Marc Marchon (25), Sven Senteler (37) and Dario Simion (48).

Two of the three goals conceded were unnecessary. The 0:1 by Matej Kaslik (4.) was preceded by a mistake in his own zone by 21-year-old Rodwin Dionicio, one of two debutants in the Swiss team alongside 18-year-old Ludvig Johnson. Marc Marchon lost the puck in the neutral zone before the 2:3 (46.), which was also scored by Kaslik. For the Slovaks, it was their first defeat of the season after ten wins. The two teams will meet for a second time on Friday in Herisau.
