The Swiss national team wins the silver medal in the team pursuit at the European Track Cycling Championships in Konya, Turkey.
Noah Bögli, Luca Bühlmann, Mats Poot and Alex Vogel were beaten by the team from Denmark by just over four and a half seconds in the final.
Nevertheless, the quartet reached new dimensions. In the main round at midday - Pascal Tappeiner was used instead of Luca Bühlmann - the Swiss team covered the 4000 m in 3:44.754 minutes, improving the national record set the day before in qualifying by around 1.9 seconds. With this time, they beat the higher-ranked British team. In the final, they achieved a time of 3:47.033 minutes. The Danes had lowered the world record to 3:39.977 minutes in the main round.
The men's four thus won a European Championship medal for the second time in a row. A year ago, the Swiss won bronze in Zolder in a time of 3:53.467 minutes. Their national record in Konya was almost ten seconds faster.
The Swiss women also put in a very good performance in Turkey, finishing in 5th place. Michelle Andres, Lorena Leu, Jasmin Liechti and Aline Seitz beat Belgium in the main round. They needed 4:12.094 minutes for the 16 laps, improving the Swiss record set the day before in qualifying by 2.9 seconds. Only 2.5 seconds separated the quartet from a place in the small final.
Lorena Leu also competed in the elimination race. The 21-year-old from Uri finished in 6th place in the competition won by two-time road world champion Lotte Kopecky from Belgium.
"The development work of the past few years is now paying off. Our young team has taken a big step forward. Many things were very good, but we still have reserves," said Julien Bossens, who forms the national coaching team together with Morgan Kneisky and Tristan Marguet.
