It takes nerves of steel, but luck is on the side of the Swiss team at the World Cup jumping competition in Gothenburg.

Olympic silver medallist Steve Guerdat and Edouard Schmitz managed to qualify for the World Cup Final in Basel at the last minute.

It was exciting right down to the last pair of riders: Little would have been missing and Switzerland would have been represented at the championships in Basel in April with just Martin Fuchs. But Schmitz in the saddle of Gamin in 8th place and Guerdat on Dynamix in 14th place scored just enough World Cup points to make it into 17th and 18th place in the European ranking for Basel - the cut follows after 18th place.

The absence of Guerdat in particular would have been a bitter blow for the organizers in Basel. With three victories, the man from Jura is the record holder of the World Cup Final, which is unofficially referred to as the World Indoor Championships. Guerdat now has the chance to become the sole record holder with a triumph at the most important championship of 2025 for the Swiss.

The 310,000 euro competition in Gothenburg was won by local rider Linda Heed with Skylander ahead of the German Mario Stevens with Starissa and the Dutch rider Maikel van der Vleuten on Beauville. Géraldine Straumann and Long John Silver would only have had a mathematical chance of reaching the World Cup Final in Basel if they had won. With two knockdowns, the rider from Basel will not be able to take part in this event. Martin Fuchs had three knockdowns with Commissar Pezi.
