The Swiss national team got off to the best possible start to the Olympic and home World Championship season at the Euro Hockey Tour. They beat the hosts Finland 3:1 in Tampere.

It was only in the final period that the previously harmless Swiss showed their offensive teeth. First Attilio Biasca deflected a shot onto the crossbar (45'), then Ken Jäger finished off a fine individual performance with the goal (48'). The 22-year-old Biasca then scored his second international goal three and a half minutes later. Both caught Biel goalie Harri Säteri over the stick hand on the right.

In the final phase, the Finns were able to reduce the deficit through Jere Innala in overtime, but Christoph Bertschy secured the win with a shot into the empty net 23 seconds before the end.

In a game without any major highlights, the Swiss struggled until the final period. Veteran goalie Reto Berra kept his team in the game. Without the NHL stars and the two exceptional ZSC players Denis Malgin and Sven Andrighetto, the creative element in the Swiss game was missing. However, it was pleasing to see that the second line was also solid, at least in defense. They conceded only a few good chances to the visually superior Finns, who fielded ten players from the National League.

It was only in the last two minutes of the middle third that they were able to develop some pressure - and built on this improvement in the final period, while the home team clearly declined in front of a good 8,100 spectators.

The Swiss face Sweden in their second game on Saturday (12:00). Last season, Patrick Fischer's team won three out of four duels against their long-standing nemesis. They may have to do without Calvin Thürkauf, who withdrew injured in the final period.
