The Swiss women suffer their first defeat at the World Championships in Uijeongbu, South Korea. The team led by skip Silvana Tirinzoni loses 6:7 to world champions Canada after an extra end.
A year ago, the Swiss ended their reign of four consecutive world championship titles with a 5:7 loss to Canada with skip Rachel Homan in the final in Sydney in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. This time, the quartet of Selina Witschonke, Carole Howald, Tirinzoni and Alina Pätz were beaten for the first time after winning eight games.
The Canadians took advantage of the last stone in the extra end. Extra time was the logical consequence of a game in which neither team was able to take a decisive lead and which, as expected, was evenly poised.
Despite the defeat, the Swiss continue to lead the rankings. Alongside the Canadians, South Korea and Sweden are next best with an interim record of seven wins and two defeats.
The Swiss will play again on Thursday. Their opponents will be Lithuania, who have no points.
