The Swiss women miss out on group victory at the floorball world championship in the Czech Republic. They were defeated 4:7 by the hosts in Brno.
Despite the defeat, national coach Oscar Lundin's team has nothing to hide. Both teams put in a strong performance. Laila Ediz, Anja Wyss and Norina Reusser scored twice to keep Switzerland in the game for at least two periods and up to 4:4. At the start of the final period, the Czech team pulled away to 6:4 with two goals. And Sarka Stankova, the best player on the pitch, went one better with her third goal to make it 7:4.
The game was also a rematch of the bronze medal match at the 2023 World Championships - back then, the Swiss lost (4:5) and finished fourth without a precious metal for the first time since the 2011 home World Championships.
This is now to be rectified in the Czech Republic. Since 2003, the Swedes, the Finns, the Swiss and the Czech Republic have won every World Championship medal, with the Swedes winning gold without interruption since 2007.
As the runners-up in their group, the Swiss will go straight through to the quarter-finals, but are likely to meet the Swedes, who secured first place in the other top group late on Monday evening, in the semi-finals. However, the Finns are also playing very well. After losing the World Championship final twice recently, they are now aiming for gold. It is therefore quite possible that the Swiss and the Czech women will meet again next Sunday in the bronze medal match.
First up is a quarter-final on Thursday evening. Their opponents are not yet known and will be determined in the round of 16.
