After the victories against Iran (34:9) and Senegal (25:24), the young Swiss women demanded everything from the favored Hungarians for a long time in 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. The team of coach Knut Ove Joa got off to a dream start and led 6:2 in the 8th minute. After the Eastern Europeans had reduced the deficit to 9:10 (21st), the Swiss pulled away to 13:9 (24th). They led 14:13 at the break.

In the second half, the World Cup debutants were shown their limits somewhat after the Hungarians improved in defense. In the 40th minute, they fell behind for the second time in the game at 17:18. After making it 18:19 (42'), they conceded six goals in a row to make it 18:25 (49'). It was their ninth defeat in their ninth encounter with the Hungarians.

Goalkeeper Lea Schüpbach and center Tabea Schmid earned the best marks for the Swiss side. The former recorded a defensive rate of 38 percent with 13 saves, while Schmid scored twelve goals from 15 attempts.

"We made too many simple mistakes in the second half, which they consistently exploited," Schmid told Swiss television. "I'm proud of our performance, especially in the first half. We fought until the end. It's a shame that the result was so clear-cut in the end. I didn't have the feeling that we were that much worse. We'll certainly take the positives with us now - there were plenty of them."

In the main round, the Swiss will face Japan (Wednesday), Denmark (Friday) and Romania (Sunday) in Rotterdam. They will take the two points they won against Senegal with them. The first two teams in each of the four main round groups will qualify for the quarter-finals.
