The Swiss curlers got off to a perfect start in the Olympic tournament. Selina Witschonke, Carole Howald, skip Silvana Tirinzoni and Alina Pätz beat Italy 7:4.
The Swiss women were convincing in the first game. The entire quartet played very, very well. Above all, the Swiss played far more precisely and consistently than the Italians. Italy was able to open the game with the advantage of the last stone, but lost control of the game early on. The Swiss then scored two points each in the second end (to make it 2:1), the fifth end (to make it 4:2) and the seventh end (to make it 6:3) when they were able to play the last stone.
The good start to the tournament should calm Swiss nerves. "We want to win a medal," said 46-year-old Silvana Tirinzoni from Bern before her first appearance. The clear message comes as no surprise: Team Tirinzoni has won gold four times in a row at the World Championships since 2019 and most recently two silver medals. However, Tirinzoni missed out on the medals twice in her first two Olympic appearances in 2018 and 2022 - and even missed out on the semi-finals once.
In the next rounds, the Swiss will face China (on Friday), Japan and Canada (both on Saturday).
