The European Beach Volleyball Championships in the Netherlands get off to a successful start from a Swiss perspective. Both women's duos start the tournament with a win.
Esmée Böbner and Zoé Vergé-Dépré were hardly challenged in their first group match in Apeldoorn by the Ukrainians Valentina Davidova/Angelina Chmil. The Olympic quarter-finalists fully lived up to their role as favorites with a 21:8, 21:16 victory.
Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Mäder had a little more trouble in their opening match. The pair from Bern and Zurich first had to concede the set against the German duo of Hanna-Maria Schieder/Karla Borger before prevailing 15:11 in the tie-break. It was the first appearance for the 2020 European champions after they announced on Monday that they would be going their separate ways at the end of the season after eight years together.
Group winners directly in the round of 16
If the two Swiss teams also win their remaining two group matches on Wednesday, they will be guaranteed a direct place in the round of 16. The second and third-placed teams in the group will have to take a detour via the round of 16.
The search is on until Saturday to find the successor duo to Tanja Hüberli/Nina Brunner, who did not defend their European Championship title from last year. Instead, the women from central Switzerland are taking a break after winning the Olympic bronze medal.
The two Swiss men's duos Marco Krattiger/Florian Breer and Quentin Métral/Yves Haussener will also take part in the tournament for the first time on Wednesday.
