The Swiss curlers led by skip Yannick Schwaller are through to the semi-finals at the World Championships in Moose Jaw. Thanks to victories against the Czech Republic (6:5) and South Korea (9:5), they finished the round robin in 2nd place.
Pablo Lachat-Couchepin, Sven Michel, Schwaller and Benoît Schwarz-van Berkel played a back-and-forth game with the Czech Republic. The Swiss were trailing 4-5 before the last end, before Schwarz-van Berkel secured victory with a brilliant last stone to a house of two. The score against South Korea was 5:1 at the break, after which Team CC Geneva left nothing to chance.
The Swiss finished the preliminary round with a 9-3 win. Only the hosts Canada (11:1) had a better record. Thanks to reaching the semi-finals, Schwaller and Co. secured their ticket for the Winter Olympics next February in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. A total of seven quota places were awarded.
This is the third time in a row that Switzerland has competed at a World Championships with this line-up. In 2023, the quartet took bronze, followed by a disappointing 7th place in Schaffhausen a year ago. Now Schwaller and Co. are fighting for another medal. Their opponents in the semi-final will be the winner of the match between China and Norway. Both teams defeated the Swiss in the round robin. In the other semi-final, Canada will face either defending champions Sweden or Scotland.
