At the meeting of the Sports Parliament in Ittigen near Bern, the delegates approved the establishment of an association to develop a bid and approved a budget of CHF 770,000. A feasibility study had come to the conclusion that such an event is "feasible and a historic opportunity for Swiss sport", writes the umbrella organization Swiss Olympic.

The European Championships are a multi-sport event in which several European championships of different sports take place simultaneously under one roof. Following the successful stagings in Glasgow and Berlin in 2018 and in Munich in 2022, the third edition is to be held in Switzerland in 2030. The award is scheduled for early 2027.

Eleven sports planned

The 2030 sports program provides for the staging of competitions in eleven sports (basketball 3x3, beach volleyball, canoeing, athletics, cycling, rowing, sport climbing, table tennis, triathlon, artistic gymnastics and floorball), spread across up to seven cities. The integration of orienteering and badminton is also being examined.

According to the feasibility study, the budget should amount to around CHF 190 million. Part of the budget will be used for legacy measures. The European Championships Bid Association intends to work closely with those responsible for the Swiss bid for the 2038 Olympic and Paralympic Games on this and other issues.

Convincing the Federal Council and Parliament

Severin Moser, President of the Swiss Employers' Association, is to become President of the association, with Doris Keller, who was at the helm of this summer's successful European Women's Football Championships, as Director.

According to Swiss Olympic, the next stage will be to convince the Federal Council and Parliament, as well as the cantons and cities interested in hosting the event, that the investment in this event is worthwhile.
