Thanks to seven good minutes in the middle third, Team Canada wins its first game at the Spengler Cup in Davos against the US Collegiate Selects 3:2.
It's the big experiment at this year's Spengler Cup: a team of 20- to 24-year-old students from American colleges and universities. In their debut, the selection of the biggest university talents proved to be absolutely competitive.
The only time they paid the price was in just under seven minutes at the start of the middle third, when they temporarily lost concentration and order and even conceded the first goal while outnumbered. The much more experienced Canadians took advantage of this to score three goals between the 24th and 31st minute to make it 3-0.
However, the amateurs did not allow themselves to be shaken off by the professionals, who are on average eight years older, and reduced the deficit to 2:3 in the second period and in the 48th minute.
However, the Canadians are likely to struggle to end their six-year drought with their 17th tournament win in their 40th appearance in Graubünden this year. They barely avoided an embarrassment that would hardly have been appreciated at home. The quality has clearly declined since fewer Canadian mercenaries have been active in Switzerland. Only six players from the National League, but many from the second-tier AHL, were on the ice on Friday night.
