Daria Kassatkina, number 12 in the world rankings, has announced that she will be playing under the Australian flag in future.
The Russian has been given permanent residence there. The 27-year-old from Togliatti is one of the few Russian sportswomen to have publicly criticized the invasion of Ukraine.
"I am proud to announce that from now on I will be representing my new home country Australia in my professional tennis career," Kassatkina wrote on Instagram. "I will always have respect and loving appreciation for my roots, but I am very happy to start a new chapter under the Australian flag," wrote the eight-time tournament winner.
Kasatkina previously described the war started by Russia in Ukraine as a "nightmare" and criticized Russia's attitude towards the homosexual community, to which she belongs. Before moving to Australia, she lived in Dubai. Russians are fully eligible to compete in tennis under a neutral flag.
