The start of the Swiss turf season cannot take place as planned. The frozen Lake St. Moritz will not allow any races on Sunday, February 2.

On Friday morning, the St. Moritz Racing Club had to make the decision to cancel the first race day of the White Turf meeting due to the situation on the lake.

During the track inspection and the drone flight on Friday morning, it became apparent that the track made of ice and compacted snow was washed out in some places. These wet patches are the result of the heavy precipitation - both snow and rain - at the beginning of this week. Those responsible have announced "with a heavy heart" that it is not possible to guarantee a race-ready track by Sunday and to ensure the safety of all two- and four-legged friends involved.

However, Thomas Walther, President of the St. Moritz Racing Association, is confident about the next two race Sundays on February 9 and 16, as well as the Family Days planned for Saturday (February 8 and 15). "After the precipitation, we were missing two or three additional cold nights until Sunday. The next drone flight is planned for next Wednesday," explained Walther. The drone will use a thermal imaging camera to check whether the predicted low temperatures have had the desired effect. "Preparations are now running at full speed for the next two race weekends," said Walther.
