  • The Kansas City Chiefs have no chance in the Super Bowl and miss out on a third consecutive title.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles dethrone the defending champions 40-22.
  • Almost everything went right for Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. The 26-year-old put in a strong performance and was the dominant figure in Philadelphia's offense.

The Chiefs wanted to underline their dominance in American football with the "Threepeat", their third title in a row. In fact, they were dominated - from A to Z. Most fans in New Orleans, Louisiana, and watching on TV around the world must have been rubbing their eyes in amazement by half-time: The Chiefs had only gained 23 yards in space, the Eagles 179. 0:24 was the score at the break.

In particular, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has been celebrated in recent years, did not live up to the high expectations. He threw two passes into the arms of the opponent (interception), which led to 14 points for the opponent. Once directly from the defense, once on the Eagles' subsequent offensive play.

Anyone expecting a comeback from the team from the US state of Missouri in the second half was disappointed. The Chiefs only scored for the first time shortly before the final quarter and with the score at 0:34. The two touchdowns at the end came far too late. The last time there was a similarly clear result in a Super Bowl was four years ago, when the Chiefs lost 9:31 to the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Hurts shines

For Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, on the other hand, almost everything went right. The 26-year-old put in a strong performance and was the dominant figure in Philadelphia's offense. This was also due to the fact that the Chiefs' defense was initially well adjusted to running back Saquon Barkley. As the running game struggled at first, Hurts kept looking for his pass receivers - and found them in most cases. For Hurts, the performance, for which he was rewarded with the MVP title, was particularly satisfying after he had repeatedly been criticized for alleged inaccuracies in the passing game since the final defeat two years ago (35:38).

While Barkley went without a touchdown on his 28th birthday, another "birthday boy" stepped into the breach. Defensive player Cooper DeJean, who turned 22 on Sunday, intercepted a ball from Mahomes and carried it into the end zone. He was representative of Philadelphia's overall strong defense, which had already shone with top marks in the regular season.

Barkley, meanwhile, could easily get over the missed touchdown. In his first year after the Giants era, he not only won his first title, but also set a record: With 2504 running yards in the regular season and playoffs, he surpassed the previous record set by Terrell Davis (2476) in 1998.

Lamar ignores lawsuit threat

As always, the Super Bowl was accompanied by a lot of show and celebrities. Stars such as Bradley Cooper, Adam Sandler, Paul McCartney and Lionel Messi were in the stadium for the National Football League final. Donald Trump was the first sitting US president to attend the Super Bowl.

The half-time show was hosted by Kendrick Lamar, who performed his five Grammy-winning "diss track" against Canadian rapper Drake ("Not Like Us") on stage despite the threat of a lawsuit. The show was repeatedly interrupted by actor Samuel L. Jackson, who commented on Lamar's performance as the embodiment of the American character Uncle Sam.

In a tribute to the victims of the terrorist attack in New Orleans that left 14 dead earlier this year, singer Lady Gaga had also performed on a piano on the world-famous Bourbon Street.
