The Swiss women failed to get off to a good start at the Ice Hockey World Championships in the Czech Republic. They lost 3-0 to the hosts in their opening game.

The Swiss women were already 2-0 down after the first period in Ceske Budejovice. Kristyna Kaltounkova scored the second goal 13 seconds before the break. After the 3:0 before half-time, the game was more than a foregone conclusion.

Captain Lara Stalder missed the best two Swiss chances in the middle period. Overall, however, coach Colin Muller's players were too harmless offensively against the robust Czech team. They failed to score from 26 shots (Czech Republic 31). At least they were on a par in the final third - thanks in part to two power plays.

The format with the top five nations in one group means that the Swiss have already secured their place in the quarter-finals. However, in losing to the Czech Republic for the fifth time in a row, they were defeated by one of the teams they would have to beat in the battle for their second World Championship medal in history.

Canada and the USA are probably out of reach. The Swiss will face defending champions Canada in their second game on Friday.
