Thompson beats Lyles for the first time

Thompson got off to the better start and was in the lead early on. Although Lyles fired up the turbo in the final meters, he was unable to close the gap completely. At the finish line, the American's difference to the fastest of the year was three hundredths. Lyles' compatriot Kenny Bednarek completed the podium in 9.96 seconds.

The race was the first direct meeting between Thompson and Lyles since the Olympic final in Paris, which Lyles won by a wafer-thin margin. With a view to the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo, Thompson has now made a strong statement.

Hodgkinson impresses on comeback

Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson also made an excellent impression in the women's 800m race. The 23-year-old clocked 1:54.74 minutes in her first competition since her Olympic victory in Paris. No one had ever been faster over the two laps of the track this year. Less than a month before the World Championships in Japan, Hodgkinson confirmed her status as the favorite for gold.

Now comes Athletissima

Next up, the Diamond League stops off with the Athletissima on Wednesday, August 20, at the Pontaise in Lausanne. A week later, on Wednesday, August 27 and Thursday, August 28, the finals of the 32 Diamond League disciplines will be held first on Sechseläutenplatz and the following day at Letzigrund in Zurich.
