SC Bern has never lost two games in a row since January 24. However, the Bernese started the playoff quarter-finals against Fribourg with a 3:4 n.V. (h) and a 0:3 (a).

"We know that: We lost the thread," said Tristan Scherwey, Fribourg's cult player in the service of SC Bern. In the final stages of the game, Scherwey tried to make his mark with his usual (exaggerated) toughness. Somehow, these interludes reflected the helplessness of the Bern team.

"We certainly have to look at our performance (on Sunday) and analyze it," said Scherwey. "We also had some good phases. But overall we came up with far too little." Coach Jussi Tapola also no longer understood the world: "I was still satisfied with the first few minutes. We started well. But the first goal we conceded (after six minutes) had far too great an impact on our performance. The rule for the next few games is: no matter what happens, we have to keep playing."

Tapola changed the goalie for Game 2 after Friday's defeat: instead of Philipp Wüthrich, the Swede Adam Reideborn was in goal this time. Instead, forward Victor Ejdsell, Bern's third-best scorer in qualifying, had to sit in the stands. Tapola already rotated the goalies in and out in the playoffs a year ago. Back then, SCB ultimately failed to beat EV Zug in seven games, and now the threat of a first-round playoff exit looms once again.

The Bernese are still talking a good game. "The next game will be in Bern again. And we'll be ready for it," promises Scherwey. And sporting director Patrick Bärtschi approves of his coach's changes in the goalie position, because "that has suited us all season long".

A 2-0 deficit is a handicap in a playoff series, but nothing is lost yet. SC Bern in particular has been Swiss champions several times in its glorious club history after trailing 2-0 - even in the quarter-finals. Most recently, SC Bern was 2-0 down in the semi-final against Biel in 2019 and went on to win the title. However, if the season is to continue for the SCB for at least another month, the Bernese stars will have to take on more responsibility - and more must be produced in offense.
