Two mountaineers have been found dead on the Weissmies in the canton of Valais after a lengthy search operation involving helicopters. Several days earlier, one of the two men fell while descending the mountain, as the Valais cantonal police announced on Thursday.
One of the alpinists fell last Friday at around 10.30 a.m. at an altitude of approximately 3,950 meters, according to the statement. On Thursday, the reason for the man's fall was still unclear.
His companion, who witnessed the accident, immediately alerted the rescue services. Despite several search flights, the rescue teams from the Valais cantonal rescue organization, Air Zermatt and Rega were unable to locate the accident victims immediately. Last Tuesday, both climbers could only be found dead, as the police reported.
The formal identification of the victims was still underway on Thursday. The public prosecutor's office opened an investigation.
