The Swiss national ice hockey team starts the Euro Hockey Tour home tournament in Zurich with a defeat. Patrick Fischer's team loses to Sweden in a penalty shoot-out
After a 2:2 after 65 minutes, the short decision was a clear one. While two out of three Swedish penalty takers scored, Damien Riat and Théo Rochette failed on their attempts on the Swiss side.
After the desolate 8-3 defeat against Sweden at the Karjala Cup in November, the Swiss team came in for a lot of criticism. In the second meeting of the season, which is being held under the motto "Olympic dress rehearsal", Patrick Fischer's team has considerably more quality and experience. They appeared much improved on Thursday, but after a promising start with two early powerplay goals, they were unable to conceal certain deficits. The break in the Swiss game came with a five-minute penalty against Andrea Glauser shortly before half-time. The Lausanne defender was consequently sent to the showers early after a knee check.
The long overtime situation initially yielded no results for the Swedes, coached by future Servette coach Sam Hallam, also because Leonardo Genoni made several miraculous saves in the Swiss goal to save the 2:1 lead going into the second break. After the early equalizer by Langnau's top scorer André Petersson (42') in the final period, the Swiss recovered, but were unable to build on their strong opening phase.
They had set the tone in front of a good 5,000 spectators at the ZSC Lions' home ground and were rewarded thanks to their high level of efficiency. The first four shots on the Swedish goal resulted in two goals - both on the powerplay.
The 1:0 in the 3rd minute was scored by Tyler Moy in baseball style after a rebound. The Swiss top scorer of the last World Championship thus ended his goal drought of 19 games (including the national team). In the second overtime situation, Damien Riat scored to make it 2:1 after a beautiful assist from Denis Malgin. Dario Simion had the third Swiss goal on his stick shortly before the end of the middle third, but failed to hit the post.
It was Switzerland's ninth defeat in their tenth game at a home Euro Hockey Tour tournament. The next chance to improve on this poor record comes after a day off on Saturday (18:00) against the Czech Republic. The Olympic dress rehearsal concludes on Sunday (15:45) with a clash against Olympic champions Finland.
