Slovakia misses mega chance Ukraine turn the game around and can continue to dream of the round of 16

Thanks to a 2:1 win over Slovakia, Ukraine remain in the race for a place in the knockout phase. Mykola Sharapenko and Roman Yaremchuk turned the game around for the Ukrainians in the second half.

It took the Ukrainians more than 120 minutes to get into the tournament. After the 3-0 defeat against Romania at the start of the tournament, they also lacked a lot at the beginning of the second group game. Only when Alexander Tymchyk hit the post after just over half an hour did it act as a wake-up call for the team of national coach Sergei Rebrow. Consequently, Mykola Shaparenko equalized in the 54th minute, and ten minutes before the end, substitute Roman Yaremchuk scored the winner.

At the start, it looked as though the Slovakians were on their way. Italian coach Francesco Calzona's team seamlessly picked up where they left off in their first group game against Belgium. Ivan Schranz put the overwhelmingly superior Slovaks ahead after 17 minutes. It was the second goal of the tournament for the 30-year-old winger from Slavia Prague. However, the Slovaks then dropped off sharply and allowed the Ukrainians to get back into the game.

While Slovakia missed out on an early place in the round of 16, the Ukrainians are back in the race for a place in the knockout phase. Both teams have three points ahead of the final matchday.
