Scenes like in the movie "Cool Runnings" at the four-man bobsleigh World Cup in St. Moritz: US pilot Kristopher Horn crosses the finish line alone because three of his four pushers fall at the start.
The surprise victory of the new European four-man bobsleigh champion Adam Ammour from Germany and the European Championship bronze medal of Switzerland's Michael Vogt went somewhat under the radar in St. Moritz. Everyone was only talking about the mega mishap of US helmsman Kristopher Horn's crew.
Almost like in the movies - only more dangerous
Scenes like this had previously only been seen in the Disney cult film "Cool Runnings". During the four-man bobsleigh World Cup race on the legendary natural ice track in the Engadine, all three of Horn's pushers slipped off and were unable to get into the sled.
In fact, the mishap was anything but harmless: slipping and sliding, the Americans could only look on as Horn steered the 210-kilogram bobsleigh towards the finish alone. Due to the lack of weight, he literally skidded down the 1722-metre run in St. Moritz.
The big problem: Horn can't reach the brakes from his position - because they are at the very back of the bobsleigh and are actually the job of a team colleague.
First handlebars, then brakes
However, the US pilot mastered the bumpy ride confidently and without crashing. At the end, Horn thoughtfully slipped three positions back from the steering ropes to the brakeman position and brought his big sled safely to a halt.
He received spontaneous applause from the other bobsleigh drivers and the fans on the track. According to the regulations, the team was disqualified, as all four passengers must finish.
