The USA are Olympic champions in women's ice hockey for the third time. Coach John Wroblewski's team defeated arch-rivals Canada 2:1 after overtime in the final.

The women's ice hockey team took part in the Winter Olympics for the eighth time, and the final was Canada v USA for the seventh time, with the Americans winning for the third time after 1998 and 2018. Megan Keller scored the winning goal in the 5th minute of overtime. She beautifully beat Canadian defender Claire Thompson and caught goalkeeper Ann-Renée Desbiens between the pads. Keller is a teammate of Switzerland's Alina Müller with the Boston Fleet. Müller had also scored in overtime in the bronze medal game against Sweden to make it 2-1.
For a long time, it had looked like the Canadians would win. They took the lead through Kristin O'Neill after 54 seconds in the middle third while short-handed - after a 2:1 situation. The 1-0 lead held until 124 seconds before the end of regulation time, when Hilary Knight equalized with a deflection. The Americans were playing without a keeper at this point. It was Knight's 15th goal of the Winter Games.
The USA had already beaten the Canadians at last year's World Championships in the final in overtime, 4:3 on that occasion. Overall, it was their eighth win in a row against their arch-rivals. In Milan, they won the preliminary round 5:0. In the four test games last November and December, known as the "Rivalry Series", the USA won all four games with a goal difference of 24:7. The Olympic victory was therefore nothing but logical.
