Switzerland's greatest medal hopes, Anouk and Zoé Vergé-Dépré, have made a successful start to the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Australia.
The sister duo, seeded number 11, lived up to their role as favorites in their first group match in Adelaide, beating the Dominicans Crismil Paniagua/Julibeth Payano (number 38) 21:14, 21:12.
With this opening victory, the women from Bern have taken an important step towards the round of 16. On Saturday, they will face the locals Elizabeth Alchin/Georgia Johnson in their second group match, against whom they are again clearly favored on paper. A sister duel awaits them at the end of the preliminary round with the Austrians Dorina and Ronja Klinger (number 14). All group winners and runners-up as well as the four best third-placed players will qualify directly for the round of 16.
The second Swiss women's duo, Annique Niederhauser/Leona Kernen, on the other hand, started the World Championships tournament with a defeat. The silver medallists at the 2023 U21 World Championships lost to Germany's Melanie Paul/Lea Kunst 21:11, 18:21, 11:15 despite clearly winning the opening set.
The men's tournament kicked off with a Swiss duel. Marco Krattiger/Leo Dillier prevailed against Adrian Heidrich/Jonathan Jordan 21:18, 22:20. The third Swiss men's duo, Yves Haussener/Julian Friedli, will not take part in the action until Saturday.
