Visp equalizes to 1:1 in the Swiss League playoff final. The Valais team defeated qualifying winners Basel at home by the narrowest of margins.
The match-winner for the victorious home team was Dario Burgener, a Visp home-grown player. In front of an atmospheric crowd of 4033 spectators, the 28-year-old striker deflected a long-range shot from Fadri Riatsch in the 46th minute to make it 1-0. There were no further goals.
Visp's victory was well deserved, as coach Heinz Ehlers' team struggled unsuccessfully against the Basel goal for a long time. After two thirds, the final score was 25:10 in favor of the fourth-placed team, which, unlike Basel, is entitled to promotion. Visp must win the playoff final in order to qualify for the league against the loser of the relegation playoff between Lugano and Ajoie.
The third game of the best-of-7 series takes place on Friday in Basel. The game kicks off at 7.45 pm.
