After La Chaux-de-Fonds in the last two years, EHC Visp wins the championship title in the Swiss League. Visp beat Basel 4:3 in game 5 and 4:1 in the playoff final.
This means that a league qualifier will be held again, as was the case two years ago. Back then, Swiss League champions La Chaux-de-Fonds lost to HC Ajoie in six games. The last team to make it through the "eye of the needle" to the National League was the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers against Kloten in the spring of 2018. Ajoie and Kloten were later promoted in the wake of the league expansion following the Covid pandemic without a promotion series.
EHC Visp secured the championship title in the Swiss League (formerly National League B) for the fourth time after 1960, 2011 and 2014. Visp, coached by Heinz Ehlers, who is returning to Denmark after this season, finished the qualifiers in fourth place, losing just two games in the playoffs against cantonal rivals Sierre (4-1), Thurgau (4-0) and qualifying winners Basel (4-1).
Things looked good for Basel for a long time in Game 5. The home team led 2:0 and 3:2, and for the first time in this playoff final, Basel scored in superior numbers. All three of their goals were scored in the power play. Previously, they had never scored in overtime in the final series against the extremely disciplined Visper.
The 25-year-old Fadri Riatsch, who has signed with Olten for next season, scored the winning goal for EHC Visp in the 57th minute.
