- Stan Wawrinka talks about the tournament, his career and his final tennis goal in a podcast appearance at Wimbledon.
- He makes us laugh when he reveals that he bought a mini Wimbledon trophy in the fan store.
Wawrinka has long since won the Australian Open (2014), Roland Garros (2015) and the US Open (2016). The "only" thing missing from the Frenchman's career slam is a triumph at Wimbledon. And that is still possible after his victory in the first round against Charles Broom (6:3, 7:5, 6:4). The next hurdle comes on Wednesday evening in the form of Frenchman Gaël Monfils (approx. 8.30 pm).
Mini trophy makes for a laugh
Meanwhile, Wawrinka does not think he has much chance of winning the tournament. "My dream before I end my career is to win another title. I don't care what level. But I want to be in a final on a Sunday and win a trophy again, that's my dream," the Swiss reveals in the "Reign With Josh Smith" podcast.
It will be "very difficult" to fulfill this dream at Wimbledon and win the career Slam, the Swiss knows. The 39-year-old has therefore already made provisions. "I went to the store and bought myself the little trophy," says Wawrinka, causing a laugh (see video below). With a grin, he adds: "Now at least I have all four trophies at home."
Important defeat against Djokovic
Wawrinka also reveals in the interview that a bitter five-set defeat against Djokovic in 2013 laid the foundation for his great success. "I lost that match back then and was very sad. But it made me realize that I can keep up with the best players in the world. That gave me a lot of self-confidence," said the Frenchman.
