As expected, the Swiss cross-country skiers eat hard bread at the end of the 10 km skating World Cup in Davos. Anja Weber achieved by far the best result with 16th place.
After a fine 10th place in the sprint on Saturday evening, Anja Weber felt her legs were tired and was still thinking about skipping the 10 km on Sunday. "But then they put me on the start list," says the 24-year-old from Zurich with a laugh. "I almost couldn't go back." Luckily: without top runner Nadja Kälin, who is ill, Weber is the best Swiss hope for a good result - and fulfills expectations.
Weber showed a consistent race and was also able to catch up with the eventual winner Karoline Simpson-Larsen from Norway on the final lap. "We were able to alternate a bit, which worked out well for both of us," says the Zurich Oberlander, who is also strong in triathlon, with satisfaction, even though she only missed the top 15 by 0.9 seconds.
After her podium finish on Saturday, Nadine Fähndrich also had a good race in 29th place.
Swiss men crash
The Swiss men, on the other hand, were disappointing across the board and were pretty helpless afterwards, also because Jason Rüesch and Nadja Käin had to miss out due to illness. Beda Klee in particular had expected much more after a good start to the season in the far north with a 14th (Ruka, 20 km), a 26th and 27th place (Trondheim, skiathlon and 10 km). He even missed the top 50 in 52nd place.
Nicola Wigger from the Zurich Oberland is the best Swiss athlete at the usual Norwegian festival in 48th place - with very mixed feelings. "I was aiming for the top 30," he says. "But best Swiss is at least something." Having already secured half an Olympic standard in the Continental Cup, he is now hoping to be selected for the Tour de Ski after Christmas.
Russia makes a modest comeback
While Norway took first and third place in the women's race, the top five and seven of the top eight in the men's race were taken by winner Einar Hedegart.
The Russians, who are eligible to compete again for the first time since February 2022, are making a modest comeback. Daria Neprjajewa, the sister of former top skier Natalia Neprjajewa, is the best of their young team in 20th place.
