The 116 medal decisions in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo represent a record for the Winter Olympics. This is seven more competitions than four years ago in Beijing.
New to the Olympic program are the ski touring races with a total of three decisions (men's and women's sprint and a mixed relay). This sport combines endurance, technique and tactical skill.
In ski jumping, the super team competition is a new format for two jumpers per nation that replaces the classic four-man team competition. Women will also be competing for Olympic medals on the large hill for the first time. In sledging, there will also be a second decision for women in the doubles event, which was previously reserved for men only.
There is a new competition in ski freestyle: in the parallel mogul piste discipline, the athletes will compete in a direct knockout duel, which promises to be exciting and suitable for TV. There will also be a new mixed team competition in skeleton with one woman and one man.
In alpine skiing, the traditional combination will be replaced by a team competition with one downhill and one slalom run. Alpine skiing is also the only discipline to lose a competition compared to 2022.
Because Cortina d'Ampezzo, where the women will be racing, and Bormio (men) are far too far apart in terms of location, there will be no mixed team competition - at least for this event in northern Italy.
