A good two months after the first combined mountain bike world championships in Valais, the organizers and the association sponsoring the major event have drawn a very positive balance.
The conclusion is also pleasing apart from the sporting achievements of the Swiss national team (14 medals). The TV coverage was watched by over 57 million people from 96 countries. At the 2024 Mountain Bike World Championships in Andorra, which were held in the traditional World Championship format, this figure was just under 10 million from 48 nations. Around 110,000 spectators were present in Valais, according to the organizers.
For the canton of Valais, the World Championships generated added value of over 19 million francs, which corresponds to 228 full-time jobs. In addition, thanks to the accompanying measures, Valais has received a first-class cycling promotion structure, which will bring Swiss Cycling significantly more talent from Valais in the future.
In financial terms, a budget of 13.7 million francs resulted in a black zero. "It is important for us to have proven that major international events can be held in Switzerland with a balanced budget," says Thomas Peter, Managing Director of Swiss Cycling.
