Great success for the Swiss epee fencers. At the traditional World Cup in Vancouver, they win with the team thanks to a victory in the final against France.
In a duel that was exciting right up to the last second, the Swiss quartet of Alexis Bayard, Ian Hauri, Jonathan Fuhrimann and substitute Lucas Malcotti, who was used for the third-last bout, won 43:42. Bayard managed to turn the tide after a narrow deficit, becoming the second-last fencer to turn 29:30 into 34:33. Hauri held on to this wafer-thin lead until the dramatic end.
On their way to the final, the Swiss defeated Australia, Spain, Hong Kong and Taiwan, who had previously eliminated the top-seeded Olympic and world champions from Japan. It is already the team's second top result this year. In May, they took 2nd place in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés.
