The 28-year-old American played the best round of the day on Saturday at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte with 65 strokes, which put him in the lead. Scheffler had already won the traditional Masters in Augusta in 2022 and 2024.

With 202 strokes before the final round, Scheffler is well ahead of second-placed Swede Alex Noren (205). The world number one showed all his class on the difficult closing holes of the challenging par 71 course in the US state of North Carolina. The Olympic champion from Paris finished the last five holes with five shots under par.

Reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy, on the other hand, is no longer in contention to win the tournament. The Northern Irishman is only tied 49th with 215 strokes before the final round.
