Wout van Aert suffered no broken bones in his heavy crash in the 16th stage of the Vuelta, but a deep cut on his knee. A start at the World Championships in Zurich seems possible.
Van Aert was forced to abandon the Tour of Spain on Tuesday. The in-form Belgian, who had won both the points classification and the mountains classification at the beginning of the final week, crashed into a rock face on a descent. Although the three-time stage winner did not suffer any broken bones, he did suffer a deep cut to his knee, which will require intensive care, as his team Visma-Lease a Bike announced on X.
It is unclear how long the healing process will take and whether Van Aert will be able to take part in the road race at the European Championships in the Belgian province of Limburg (on September 15) and the Road World Championships in Zurich (from September 22) as planned.
Van Aert had to take a long break in the spring after a serious crash in his home country. Back then, he broke his collarbone, sternum and several ribs and suffered a bruised lung.
