Yize thus succeeds his compatriot Zhao Xintong, who defeated Mark Williams from Wales 18:12 last year. "I think the decisive factor was belief," said the winner immediately after the biggest success of his career. "I've been working towards this for years and I'm happy to have achieved it."

The decision in the Crucible Theatre was made in the fourth session of the final after Murphy - the 2005 World Champion - had worked his way up in the afternoon session and was able to reduce the deficit to 12:13. Yize had already led 10:7 after the first day.
