The ZSC Lions and Fribourg-Gottéron have made a successful start to the new season. In the 1st round of the Champions Hockey League, they won in Hamar and against Sheffield respectively.
The ZSC Lions won 4:1 against the Norwegian champions. A shorthander brought the Zurich team the ultimately decisive goal. Denis Malgin escaped shortly after the middle of the game after a bad pass and decisively scored the 2:1 lead. In the 47th minute, Chris Baltisberger increased the lead to 3:1 in front of a good 3,200 spectators, and the 4:1 goal was scored into an empty net against the Norwegian champions.
The new Gottéron coach Patrick Emond experienced a nightmare start: after less than four and a half minutes, Freiburg were 2-0 down against the British champions Sheffield. After a timeout, they were able to correct the false start in front of a good 4,000 fans. However, the winning goal to make it 4:3 was not scored until 55 seconds into the final period by Killian Mottet, who scored twice.
The ZSC Lions remain in the far north. They will play their second of six games in the group stage on Saturday in Finland at Ilves Tampere. Fribourg will then travel to Hamar. Lausanne and Genève-Servette start their Champions League campaign on Friday. The top 16 (out of 24 teams) will reach the knockout phase, which begins on November 12 with the round of 16.
