YB drag Basel into misery, Sion and St. Gallen win

Even the return of Xherdan Shaqiri did not help FC Basel - the visitors lost 3-0 in Bern

Basel's 3-0 defeat in the 36th round of the Super League against YB leaves them with only a theoretical chance of reaching the European Cup. St. Gallen beat Lugano, Sion the champions from Thun.

As usual in recent years, there was nothing to be gained for FCB in Bern. Basel have been waiting almost ten years for a win in the Wankdorf. This one went to the home team after goals from Dominik Pech (49'), Darian Males (74') and Christian Fassnacht (94'), who thus dragged their opponents into misery. YB already had no chance of reaching the European Cup before this round, while FCB's hopes are now only theoretical. With two rounds to go, they are five points behind Sion and 4th place. However, this will only qualify them for the European Cup if St. Gallen win the Cup and remain in the top three.

At least the latter seems to be a formality. St. Gallen won 2:1 in Lugano and are now three points ahead of the Ticino side and five ahead of Sion. Mihailo Stevanovic (69') and Lukas Görtler (74'/penalty) turned the game around for the visitors after Mahmoud Belhadj (53') had put the home team ahead shortly after the break. In stoppage time, Ezgjan Alioski missed the equalizer for Lugano from the penalty spot.

Sion won 2-0 against newly crowned champions Thun thanks to a double strike from Winsley Boteli and Ilyas Chouaref (22nd/23rd) and celebrated their fourth win in a row. The Valais side are now only two points behind Lugano in the table.
