"It is with great sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of Eric Carmen's passing," wrote Amy Murphy, Carmen's wife, on the artist's official website.
She continues: "It brought him great joy to know that his music touched so many people over the decades and will be his lasting legacy."
The news of the singer's death ends with a quote from one of Carmen's songs: "Love Is All That Matters ... Faithful and Forever" (in German: Liebe ist alles, was zählt, treu und für immer). Murphy gave no details of the cause of death.

Before his career as a solo singer, Eric Carmen was the frontman of The Raspberries, a band he founded in 1970. However, the band disbanded after just five years.
In 1987, Carmen scored another big hit with "Hungry Eyes". The song was used for the soundtrack of the movie "Dirty Dancing", among others.
In 2000, the singer went on tour with Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and performed his greatest hits. Four years later, he performed again with his band The Raspberries.
The musician is survived by two children, whom he had with his second wife Susan Brown. He married Amy Murphy in 2016.
