Former Spice Girl Melanie Brown, aka Mel B, had to shop at Aldi and Lidl after her split from ex-husband Stephen Belafonte. The 48-year-old told the British tabloid "The Sun".

She only had 700 British pounds (the equivalent of around 820 Swiss francs today) in her pocket when she left her then-husband in 2017 and returned to the UK from the USA.

There, she initially found refuge with her mother, where she shared a bed with her children, says the singer and judge on the British casting show "X Factor".

Mel B. accuses her ex-husband of abusive behavior

"I didn't think it would happen to me in my 40s after a successful career, but I didn't know where to go," said the ex-member of the British girl group formerly known as Scary Spice.

In the meantime, however, her life has stabilized financially. Mel B accuses her ex-husband of abusive behavior. However, he has always denied the allegations. A new expanded edition of her biography "Brutally Honest" is due to be published in March.

The German discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl have long been a force to be reckoned with in the UK and have a combined market share of just under 17 percent.

In view of the dizzyingly high rate of food inflation in recent years, many Britons are turning to the discounters.
