There was long speculation as to whether the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 would really be held in Ukraine. Now it is clear: it will be another country. The Scottish head of government is campaigning for the event.

The funny hip-hoppers of the Kalush Orchestra won the ESC 2022 with "Stefania". The following ESC normally takes place in the winning country.

The next Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) will not take place in this year's winner, Ukraine, due to the Russian war of aggression. This was announced by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in Geneva on Friday.

Discussions are underway with the BBC as to whether the world's biggest singing competition could take place in England in 2023, writes the US trade journal "Variety".

Scottish head of government wants the ESC

Will the next ESC possibly take place in Glasgow? Following the decision not to hold the event in Ukraine, the Scottish head of government Nicola Sturgeon has shown willingness to host the Eurovision Song Contest.

She could imagine a perfect venue on the banks of the River Clyde, Sturgeon wrote on Twitter on Friday. She was apparently alluding to the Scottish city of Glasgow. Shortly afterwards, however, she added for good measure: "In fact, there could be several possible venues in Scotland - let's discuss!"

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) had previously announced in Geneva that next year's Eurovision Song Contest would not be held in this year's winning country, Ukraine, due to the Russian war of aggression. Instead, talks are to be held with the British BBC as to whether the ESC 2023 could be held in the UK.

The British government welcomed the opportunity to stand in for Ukraine. Should the ESC 2023 be held in the UK, it will ensure that the event reflects Ukraine's rich culture, heritage and creativity, a Downing Street spokesperson said, according to the PA news agency.
