  • The second ESC semi-final took place yesterday in Liverpool.
  • Austria, Australia, Albania, Cyprus, Estonia, Belgium, Lithuania, Poland, Armenia and Slovenia have qualified.
  • The final will take place on Saturday. Remo Forrer will compete for Switzerland.

Switzerland will compete against Austria and Australia, among others, in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2023.

The Austrians Teya & Salena secured their place in the main competition on Thursday evening at the semi-final in Liverpool, England, with their catchy electro-pop song "Who the hell is Edgar?".

The Australians from the band Voyager are also taking part with the progressive metal song "Promise". Their ESC-crazy home country took part in the competition for the first time in 2015 for the 60th edition. However, the spectacle has been broadcast in Australia since 1974.

Albania, Cyprus, Estonia, Belgium, Lithuania, Poland, Armenia and Slovenia are also in the main competition. Germany, Italy, England, France and Spain, the competition's biggest financial backers, are all guaranteed places in Saturday's final. Ukraine has also already qualified as last year's winner.

"United by Music" after Ukraine's victory

The motto of this year's ESC is "United by Music". Normally, the Ukrainians would have won the competition in 2022.

Due to the Russian war of aggression against their country, Great Britain, last year's second-placed nation, has taken on this task instead.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi was also supposed to give a short speech via video link on Saturday. This will now not happen, as the organizers EBU, the European Broadcasting Union, announced on Twitter. The cancellation of Selenskyj was done to "protect the non-political stance of the ESC".

According to the bookmakers' odds, Sweden and Finland have the best chance of winning the ESC on Saturday. However, the Swiss are of course keeping their fingers crossed for Remo Forrer, who made it to the final with a strong performance on Tuesday. "I want to place in the top ten," he told blue News afterwards.

We will see on Saturday whether that will work. blue News will be following the entire final in the live ticker.
