The singers of 702 mourn the loss of their colleague Irish Grinstead. Her sister and bandmate LeMisha Grinstead announced the death of the 43-year-old musician on Instagram.
"It is with great sadness that I have to announce that my beautiful sister and friend passed away tonight," said LeMisha.
Irish Grinstead had been struggling with her health for some time and had now "finally found peace": "She was as bright as the stars. Being on stage with her was a joy that I will cherish for the rest of my life."
"Where My Girls At" became a global hit
Irish and LeMisha Grinstead became world-famous with the girl group 702 alongside singer Kameelah Williams. They celebrated their breakthrough in 1999 with the single "Where My Girls At". The song landed in the charts worldwide - including in Switzerland.
The single was written by rap legend Missy Elliot. She also mourns the loss of her companion on social media. "Irish, may your beautiful soul find rest in the arms of the Lord", Elliot wrote on X.
Irish Grinstead was already part of 702 when it was founded in 1993. In December 2022, however, the band announced that she would have to take time off for health reasons. The cause of the singer's death is not yet publicly known.
