  • Germany's ESC representatives Lord of the Lost finished in last place with their rocking song "Blood & Glitter". Germany already took the red lantern in Turin 2022.
  • Thomas Gottschalk is angry and feels "screwed" by Europe.
  • Entertainer Guildo Horn is even calling for an ESC break of several years. Germany could invest the money more wisely.

Germany is seething after the bitter ESC result. The German rock band Lord of the Lost came off worst in the final on Saturday, finishing in last place with their song "Blood & Glitter".

Again. Back in Turin at ESC 2022, the German participant Malik Harris finished in last place with "Rockstars", while the Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra won with "Stefania".

Thomas Gottschalk rages on Instagram

So the debacle at the ESC will repeat itself for Germany in 2023. Entertainer Thomas Gottschalk is angry, but has an explanation for Germany's unpopularity: "With all due respect, the rest of Europe is taking the piss out of us when it comes to the judging at the ESC. They just don't like us," the 72-year-old wrote on his Instagram account.

The rockers Lord of the Lost were "also far too sweet". "If it's heavy metal, then it has to rattle. There's no point in waving the rainbow flag either, but ARD simply has to turn off the money tap after all these bankruptcies. No gold, no glitter!"

Guildo Horn is also bitterly disappointed

In general, Guildo Horn (60) found the ESC 2023 "musically largely bland, and the performance patterns were always the same: "Performers with 4 or 5 dancers".

Why Lord of the Lost finished at the bottom of "such a mediocre starting field" is an obvious sign "that Germany doesn't necessarily seem to be the explicit favorite of our European neighbors."

The ESC situation reminds him of the current state of the German national football team, says Horn: "There have been no successes for years, but at an official level they don't dare to make a real fresh start and are constantly stirring the same sticky bowl."

Guildo Horn has an idea of how Germany could get out of this debacle. He writes on Facebook: "Just take a break and invest the money saved (Germany is one of the ESC's major sponsors) wisely! For example, to build new daycare centers or to support the food bank! I could think of a lot of useful things. Maybe in a few years' time, with a new creative team in charge, we can start again with a certain lightness of being. That helps immensely when making music!"
